I'm sure if you ask the kids, they consider the pets a part of the family. Ok, I concede that they are - especially since their medical care costs are just as much (or more) than the children (of the human sort). Also take into consideration that, after "my purse", "pets" come second on the emergency evacuation list of things to grab, and, in what order.
Today, I took Napkins the cat AKA Napster (Justin came up with that - last kitty was Elbow, and his chicken was BumBum) to the vet. We adopted Napster from Justin when he moved to Seattle. Napster had pretty much only been an indoors pet. We consider him the "upstairs" cat. Max (the dog) is the "downstairs" pet, and Dennis (our 14 year old cat) is the "outdoors" cat. But Napster seems to have more and more interest in being outside, so I wanted to make sure he is protected from all of those big, bad germs, diseases and pests of the great outdoors - and to make sure he doesn't bring them IN the house. He got several shots and a full exam. Let's say our grocery budget will have to take some serious cutbacks to make up for the vet bill total 8-O
But, we love him - otherwise why would Jeff (the former cat dis-liker) let him sleep on our bed every night (at our feet)? That is soon going to change, though since he's now "outdoor proofed" AND since our grandbaby will soon be visiting at our house and we don't go THAT far as to let kitties and babies sleep together!
